These terms set out the basis on which the Japan Outbound Mobility & Global Relocation Reference (“the Platform”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is made available to you. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

The Platform is a reference for people living in Japan who plan to move abroad for travel, study, overseas employment, cross-border investment, or retirement. That includes Japanese citizens and long-term foreign residents of Japan. Access is free and provided on an as-is basis.

You agree to use the Platform only for lawful purposes. In particular, you agree not to:

  • attempt to disrupt, overload, or probe the site or its underlying infrastructure;
  • scrape the site at a rate that interferes with normal use by others;
  • misrepresent yourself as the Platform or its editorial team;
  • use the site to distribute malware or other harmful content.

Articles on the Platform summarize statutes, bilateral treaties, and official administrative procedures in plain language. They are prepared for educational and informational purposes only. Nothing on the site is:

  • legal, immigration, or judicial advice;
  • tax advice, tax return preparation, or an official determination by the National Tax Agency of Japan (NTA) or a foreign tax authority;
  • an official determination or binding ruling from the Japan Pension Service, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), or a foreign immigration authority;
  • an endorsement of any moving service, financial institution, money transfer service, insurance provider, or other business.

Using the site does not create an attorney-client, tax accountant-client (Zeirishi), financial adviser-client, or any other professional relationship between you and the Platform, its authors, or its contributors.

We may add, change, or remove articles at any time and without notice.

Moving abroad from Japan involves administrative, tax, and civil law requirements that depend on your nationality, residence status, assets, destination country, family situation, and length of stay. Immigration rules, visa thresholds, tax treaties, and national tax codes change often, sometimes without advance notice. What applies to a Japanese passport holder does not necessarily apply to a Permanent Resident (Eijusha) or other visa holder, and vice versa.

Before you take any step that is hard to undo, get advice for your own situation from a licensed immigration lawyer, a certified tax accountant (Zeirishi), a certified financial planner, or the relevant municipal office or government agency. This includes surrendering a residence card, filing or not filing a moving-out notification (Tenshutsu-todoke), ending health insurance coverage, claiming a lump-sum pension withdrawal, or moving significant assets.

Some articles are offered in languages other than English. These translations are provided for convenience only. The English version of each article is the authoritative version: if a translation and the English article differ, the English article prevails.

Unless otherwise noted, all original text, translations, diagrams, and design on the Platform belong to the Platform. You are welcome to quote short excerpts for personal use or commentary with attribution and a link back to the source page. Republishing whole articles, repackaging the content into other formats, or using the material to train machine-learning models requires our prior written permission.

Statutes, treaty texts, official procedures, and other public facts are not owned by anyone. Only our particular wording, arrangement, and explanations are ours.

Articles often link to external resources, such as government agencies, embassies, and official forms. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or availability of third-party sites, and a link is not an endorsement.

The Platform is provided as-is and as-available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. You use the site, and rely on its content, entirely at your own risk and judgment.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Platform, its owners, operators, authors, editors, and contributors are not liable for any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from your use of, or reliance on, the site or its content. This includes, for example:

  • loss of visa status, cancellation of Permanent Residency, or denial of re-entry to Japan or entry to another country;
  • tax assessments, penalties, interest, double taxation, or exit tax audits by Japanese or foreign tax authorities;
  • disputes over municipal residence tax, national pension payments, lump-sum pension withdrawals, or healthcare reimbursement;
  • any other financial loss or direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages.

We may update these terms from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page shows the most recent change. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.

These terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising in connection with the site or these terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Japan.
